Jade was formed in 1970 to promote the album of songs written by Marian Segal. Jade consisted of: Dave Waite, guitar, banjo and vocals...Rod Edwards: keyboards, bass and vocals.. .and Marian Segal: vocals, guitar and keyboards.

Dave Waite had worked with Marian as a duo in the folk clubs in the U.K. Rod Edwards was part of Marian's management team with Jon Miller and Roger Hand. Rod and Roger had their own recording contract and worked as: 'The Piccadilly Line' and later, 'Edward's Hand'. Shortly after the making of the JADE album in March 1970 at Trident Studios which was situated just off of Wardour Street in St. Anne's Place, Rod Edwards discontinued live work with JADE apart from some television shows which included "The Old Grey Whistle Test". His brother Garry Edwards took over his place for the live work.

The album was released in June of that year with much appraisal from Melody Maker. It became 'Folk album of the month.'  Robin Cable engineered the album and Jon Miller produced it for D.J.M. Records. The other musicians who contributed to the album were as follows:  James Litherland - guitar, played in 'Mogul Thrash' & 'Colosseum'. Pete Sears - bass, played in 'Fleur de lys', 'The Sam Gopal Dream' & 'Jefferson Starship'. Michael Rosen- guitar, played in 'Eclection'. Clem Cattini - drums, played in 'Rumpleskiltskin', 'The Tomados'& 'The Ivy League'.  Terry Cox - drums, played in 'Pentangle'. Pete York - drums, played in 'Hardin & York'. Mick Waller - drums.

The single, "Alan's Song" was released from the album just after the album release.

Photographs for the album were taken on Hampstead Heath: by photographer Barry Wentzell. Cover design by Jon Miller & Jim Goff.

The name JADE was taken and used by a three-girl group in the 1980s, they did chart.

"Fly Me To The North" one of the songs on the album, has been recorded and released by three other artists over the years.

JADE toured America and England to promote the album. The U.K. pressing of the album was a double cover with photos, credits and lyrics inside. It was simply called 'JADE' on the front cover. The U.S.A. pressing on 'Bell Records' was a single album cover with only part of the original photo on the front and the lyrics and credits on the back. The U.S.A. pressing was called: 'Marian Segal with Silver Jade', 'Fly On Strangewings'
